Eventually settles in a tiny isolated cabin in Buck to have the peaceful, private life they always wished for. I went into this story with zero expectation.
And this new Fitz won my heart even before he solved the mystery of runaway prince and saved the day. Fitz, possessed of magical skills both royal and erranf, is fokl only one who can retrieve him in time for his betrothal ceremony, thus sparing the Six Duchies profound political embarrassment.
I’m glad I didn’t give up on her after Assassin’s Quest.

Same for the plot. As Fitz is so much older and wiser by this book fiol he has matured and had a life – he makes for a dobin more likeable character, less inclined to childish mistakes and folly.
She’s descriptive, moving, and engrossing. Hap goes to Buckkeep to start an apprenticeship with Gindast, a well known cabinet maker. That sort of life has fol slow tempo built into it as anyone who has lived in relative isolation can attestso causing the reader to experience that tempo is just one more way that they can become immersed in Fitz’s experiences- as I did.
It was almost like enjoying his comfortable life was a well earned and just reward for what happened to him as a child.

Robin Hobb is a much praised and admired author due to the fact that she is a storyteller of rare skill with a unrivalled command of the English language.

It was pages in the making and still I was shocked hide spoiler ]. I listened during my commute, during work, during cooking, during putting my kids to bed.
She doesn’t rlbin to keep your attention with epic battle scenes, but maintains it more subtly with stunning language and unforgettable characters. His reaction is unsurprising when his former mentor and friend comes seeking his help: I was invested in the goings-on at Buckkeep as soon as Fitz arrived. I don’t finish books I don’t like. My memory of it was surprisingly fuzzy considering how much I remembered loving it the first time. The plot really began much later in the book, and while I don’t have a problem with that, per se, I did feel a little like the later action was an afterthought.
