Antic Hay by Aldous Huxley. The writing is sharp and vivid, but the overall tone suggests the depth of disillusion that resulted from the disaster I read this book because Lois Gordon’s excellent biography of Nancy Cunard cites it. And utterly remote, absorbed in their grave, solemn ecstasy, the robed and mitred priest held out, the dying saint yearningly received, the body of the Son of God. Heavyhanded and confused, it never gels to anything even remotely memorable.
